Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Rowenta DX1700 Effective IronCustomer Review: Good while it lasted Summary: 3 StarsI received this iron from my MIL for Christmas 2007. I had asked for a Rowenta that wasn't too heavy, since I have carpel tunnel. This iron worked good, but not great. I would have loved more steam. The iron died in January 2009, of course after the warranty period. To be fair, I do iron off and on for hours a day, six days a week, so if you added up the hours of use, it probably lasted a fair amount of time. However I have in the past used inexpensive irons that lasted far longer under the same conditions.
Customer Review: No Germany - No Quality Summary: 1 StarsThis Rowenta model is a big comedown from Rowenta's previous quality. A previous DX1700 I owned lasted about 6 years with heavy usage. The replacement I have now is garbage. The first replacement DX1700 I brought home made strange noises from day one and fizzled out within a week. The second replacement has spit when the vents are wide open from day one and I only chose to keep it because of the hassle of another return. After two years, the burst of steam button is now sticking from constant use because of the other problem. When I noticed that these irons were made in China, not Germany as was the case in the past, I contacted Rowenta to let them know that their quality was suffering. I was told that the facilities they use in China match the quality of those made in Germany. If that's the case, why are the models made in Germany approximately 100% more expensive than the DX1700? All I can say is shame on Rowenta. I'm looking for a new brand.

Customer Review: An early death Summary: 1 StarsAfter reading stellar reviews about Rowenta, I was fully prepared to fork over more than should ever be paid for an iron, despite the fact that I rarely iron. (My husband is far more fastidious than I am and the primary iron-wielder in our family.)
I imagined that my lovely new Rowenta would change all that. With pride, I unwrapped my new prize, imagining that its super-smoothing powers would glide magically over my wayward linens and crinkly cottons. With this Cadillac of all irons, I was going to be an ironer extraordinaire.
Well, not so much. Sure, it ironed ok, but between you and me, if someone would have placed a smart little Rowenta costume on a Black and Decker iron when I wasn't looking, I don't think I would have known the difference.
Oh, I tried to convince myself of its superiority. I even tried to convince my husband, who was dubious of its impressive pedigree. "It's the best!" I swore. He didn't buy it.
Well, about a year and a half later, after being out of town, I came home to find an imposter iron in our laundry room. The horror! Where was my beautiful-but-mediocre-performing Rowenta? Dead. Lifeless. Checked out. My wrinkle-free husband had purchased a less sexy but better performing iron while I was away.
I've kept the Rowenta around for awhile, just to look at, a little reluctant to toss it in the electronics recycling bin. I keep hoping a small kick, a jolt to its first-rate frame, might bring it back to life. Ah, but no such luck. I certainly wouldn't buy another one, and I couldn't recommend it for anyone else, either.
